Music

Curriculum Intent for Music

At St Matthew’s our aim is to inspire and engage our children so not only do they develop a love of music but also develop their creativity and talent as musicians along with their self-confidence.  Our music curriculum helps the children gain an understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating and composing across a range of forms, cultures and traditions.

Curriculum Implementation for Music

We follow the National Curriculum and use Charanga to support the teaching and learning of the subject – as a result the children receive a rich, varied and progressive curriculum.  Please see the attached knowledge and skills documents.

We love singing at St Matthew’s and have a singing assembly once a week.  The children get the opportunity to perform many of the songs that they have learnt to their families at an Easter and Christmas church service, the Christmas nativity, Harvest, mothers and father’s day assemblies, class assemblies and the Year 2 leavers service.

Year 2 get the opportunity to take part in a Singing Picnic each year where they share a song that they have learnt and also take part in singing games.  They also take part in the Surrey Music Festivals where they join forces with other schools and sing as one large choir.  At Christmas time, Year 2 often walk down to the local care home where they sing Christmas carols to the residents which is always gratefully received.

Year 1 and Year 2 have a term of recorders each year taught by a Surrey Arts music specialist.

Individual peripatetic guitar lessons are offered we have a specialist guitar teacher who comes to the school every Friday to teach.

Curriculum Impact for Music

Charanga has a clear sequence of lessons which enable the teachers to deliver high quality music lesson throughout the year.  Specialist music teaching for Year 1 and Year 2 enables the children to leave St Matthew’s playing the recorder.  All the children get to perform songs regularly through concerts and assemblies and as a result confidence and self-esteem is high.
