PE

Curriculum Intent for PE

At St Matthew’s we aim to develop an enjoyment and passion of physical activity whilst learning the importance of a healthy lifestyle.  Our curriculum offers our children high quality PE and sports provision where they achieve personal success as well as developing key skills in a variety of physical activities and sports.  We encourage the children to transfer the school values to sport and physical activity, ensuring that they aim to be the very best that they can be whilst demonstrating being ‘Ready’, ‘Respectful’ and ‘Safe’.

Curriculum Implementation for PE

The children are offered a wide range of sporting activities which are delivered by our sports coaches, Sports Stars.  Key skills are taught progressively over 2 sports a term including ball skills, invasion games, tag rugby, cricket, tri-golf, gymnastics and basketball.  We have comprehensive schemes of work and lesson plans that show clear progression between year groups.

We offer a range of after school clubs including football, tennis, dance and multisport which all have a high uptake.  Our clubs are delivered by external providers.

Swimming lessons run during the Summer term at Aquadamy, FeltonFleet.

Sports Day takes place in the Summer term where the children take part in a number of races where they earn points for their coloured house.

Throughout their time at St Matthew’s children are offered opportunities to take part in competitive sport as well as many events and festivals at other local schools/clubs.

Physical activity is embedded throughout the day through initiatives such as Go Noodle, Joe Wickes and BBC Supermovers to name but a few.

Active travel is encouraged including through the annual Golden Boot Challenge.

Curriculum Impact for PE

Children are assessed during their PE lessons and the vast majority meet or exceed the expected progress.  Uptake for after school and competitive activities is consistently high each year.  Healthy lifestyles are embedded across the school and other subjects, particularly PSHE.  Our children understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of exercise.
